A Song for my Vietnamese Adoptee Family

    0:00

In honor of the Operation Babylift anniversary, I dedicated this song to all my Vietnamese adoptee brothers and sisters who left Vietnam during, before and after Operation Babylift. This is an acoustic version of a song from my 2nd record Somewhere in the Middle.

The song title was influenced by the phrase "You were saved", often said to international adoptees by strangers who looked past their transracial adoptee journey and only focused on the differences between Vietnam and the country they were adopted into. A new life began for me in 1975 and even as an adult today, I am still trying to fully understand the past and what my life would have been like if I grew up in Vietnam. The message in the song was inspired by a conversation with my friend and fellow adoptee Bert Ballard. "This is the life we were given", he told me. Those words will always stay with me.

Peace in every step,
Jared

Something to Save By Jared Rehberg

You could say the past was unforgiven
Or you could say I'm blessed to be here
I remember I had all the answers
Until heard my voice learn to speak

No one to blame and no more anger
Sometimes questions have no answers
All I need is some connection
I'm just a name on a manifest

This is the life we were given
This is the burden we share
I wouldn't change my life is I could
Because I worked so hard to get here
And I hope someday you will too.

Too young to say goodbye
There's no memories inside
It's time I give up this fight
Just let me sleep tonight

Forget the sliding door
Cause this life is yours
Follow your wildest dreams
Stand up for what you believe

This is the life we were given
This is the burden we share
I wouldn't change my life is I could
Because I worked so hard to get here
And I hope someday you will too.

Years gone with miss pieces
This is my letter to you
One good picture isall I asked for
Don't wanna be the child from the war
We are the children of the war

Forget the sliding door
Cause this life is yours
This is the life I
And that's something to save

This is the life we were given
This is the burden we share
I wouldn't change my life is I could
Because I worked so hard to get here
And I hope someday you will too.
